Guerrier belliqueux, stratège hors pair, ce fut avant tout un chamane influent et redouté. Après avoir rompu l'accord de paix négocié par Cochise, il s'enfuit à plusieurs reprises de l. a. réserve où il était assigné et organisa des raids meurtriers au Mexique, en Arizona et au Nouveau-Mexique. Dernier guerrier apache à se rendre en septembre 1886, face à une armée de neuf mille soldats, il fut déporté avec les siens en Floride puis en Oklahoma. Converti au christianisme, devenu fermier, il mourut d'une pneumonie à citadel Sill.
